Il cluster di LCM e’ composto da 31 macchine tutte con processori a 64 bit.

Tutte le macchine bootano tramite un sistema di diskless root gestito dal nostro server principale. Questo permette alle macchine di avere indifferentemente tutte lo stesso sistema, per una maggiore omogeneità al suo interno, e per permetterne una più facile manutenzione.

Il sistema operativo scelto è Debian, basato su kernel Linux, dato che un aspetto importante del laboratorio è il promuovere il pensiero opensource. La scelta di Debian è stata fatta per la sua semplicità, stabilità e sicurezza. Va citato che inizialmente il sistema utilizzato era Gentoo.

Il cluster è suddiviso in un’aula didattica, alla quale si può accedere solo in presenza di personale, ed un’aula studio riservata ai laureandi, denominata LAUR, nella quale è presente un nodo sempre accessibile agli utenti. I nodi sui quali si trovano le schede grafiche più potenti, utilizzate durante il corso di CUDA, si trovano invece nel centro di calcolo, assieme ai nodi della Farm.

Le risorse presenti sui singoli nodi sono abbastanza eterogenee, con processori che spaziano da Intel Core i5 @ 2.8GHz a Intel Core2 Quad @ 2.8GHz, schede video NVIDIA GeForce dalla 210 alla GTX 480 e memoria RAM e HDD variabile. Lo storage locale in particolare è deistinato ad essere usato come spazio per l’output di Condor, o come swap.
